Victoria was trained by the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in developing and delivering individual and specific learning programmes. She uses multi-sensory techniques to allow learners to access areas of the curriculum or program that they may ordinarily find difficult. She has been working as a specialist since 2014 and has enjoyed the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students, including those who are dyslexic, ASD, ADHD, have an additional SPLD, non-compliant behaviour, sight difficulties and EAL. These experiences have helped her to professionally develop into an accomplished and compassionate individual, with a calm and sensitive approach, who takes each learners unique needs and interests into account and creates effective lesson plans and activities to accommodate them. Her teaching experience includes KS1-4, (11+, Common Entrance, GCSE) and also working with adults.
During the lockdowns, Victoria had to move her teaching to Zoom and realised there is potential to reach more students using this technology. She has continued to teach online and has been able to access students from across the UK and around the world. She says, ‘It has been both exciting and educational for myself to explore this way of teaching and I have found I have been able to adapt my practice to provide high quality teaching online.’

The first lesson is very relaxed and is an opportunity for me to get to know the student and for the student to get to know me. Quite often a student can feel anxious about meeting me for the first time and the idea of having a tutor. My aim is always to put the student at ease.
During the following one or two lessons I may perform some assessments to establish need and a starting point for moving forward. I will have discussed these with the student in the first lesson if they are necessary.
Once I have the information I need, I can plan the lessons accordingly. The format varies depending on the age and requirements of each student, but broadly speaking we will cover 3-4 targets in an hour lesson and will incorporate games and fun activities that are appealing and interesting to the student. Achievable targets help to build confidence and self-esteem, which can often be a barrier to learning. By moving through targets quite quickly the student remains engaged with the lesson.
For older students studying for GCSEs, we may focus on the texts they are studying; looking at understanding the plot, characters, themes etc. Quite often we will also need to work on strategies for other areas such as essay writing, creative writing, study skills and time management.
