What is specialist tuition?
Specialist tuition means that each student receives a tailor-made learning plan using multi-sensory teaching methods that work best for each individual's learning requirements, allowing them to unlock their learning potential. I cover areas such as phonological awareness, phonics, reading strategies, memory, processing, writing strategies, organisation, study skills, self-esteem and confidence building.
Where did you train and what are your qualifications?
The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre - OCR level 5 specialising in dyslexia and other SPLDs.
How long have you been doing this?
I started in 2014 and have experience working with private, state and international schools as well as home schooling and specialist school settings.
Are all sessions one to one?
Yes and this is so I can provide the support that each individual requires; no two students are the same.
When will I see progress?
Every student has a different rate of progress. It is important that I establish a good working relationship with the student to promote trust and confidence. My methods may be different to those your child is used to in a school setting and this can take a little time to get used to before you may notice any change.
Will you communicate with my child's school?
I am happy for you to put me in contact with your child's school.
Will online sessions work for my child? I'm not sure they will be able to concentrate!
The best course of action is to try it. I have been amazed by how well my students have adapted to working online and there are very few who it doesn't work for.
Are online sessions as effective as face to face?
Yes! I have adapted my tutoring resources to provide a fully multi-sensory and interactive experience online.
Do we need a fancy computer?
No, any PC or laptop with a microphone and camera is fine. I do recommend an external mouse as it allows the student more control. ChromeBooks can be problematic with some of the sharing features, so we would have to assess this in advance if that is what you were going to be using. Tablets are not ideal for the same reasons and the screen size can be too small.
How I am invoiced? What happens if we can't make a lesson?
Sessions are invoiced monthly and in advance. Sessions are scheduled in accordance to your local authority term dates and are non-refundable. There are always situations out of our control and if you are unable to attend a scheduled session, I will do my best to reschedule this for another time where possible. If I cancel a session, I will again reschedule this for another time or credit the next invoice where this is not possible.
Do we have to sign a contract?
Once sessions have been agreed I will send a parent/carer/tutor agreement covering everything we will have already discussed for you to sign and return to me. The full terms & conditions of this agreement can be found here: internal://eadded3b-8257-4f62-80bb-9236795041b2
